With 60 years of experience today, AdvisorNet Financial began as a modest company by the name of Strommen & Associates. Founded by Clair Strommen in 1959, the group had just five associates and one staff person.


During the 60s, 70s and early 80s, Strommen & Associates grew in size and scale opening offices in Duluth, North Dakota, and into Western Wisconsin. The main office was located in St. Paul on University Avenue at several addresses, eventually residing at 2469 University Avenue at the Strommen Building.


In the 1980s, ownership of AdvisorNet Financial was assumed by Dan W. Anderson, Wayne C. Swenson, and Robert Strommen when Clair Strommen left the company. Together, they formed Swenson Anderson Brokerage, and expanded insurance offerings. In 1984, our current President Daniel J. May joined the firm.



After 26 years in St. Paul,  1985 marked the move of the company’s main office to Minneapolis. 1221 Nicollet Mall would be the company’s headquarters for the next 26 years. One year later, in 1986, the firm became Swenson Anderson Associates, Inc. after the departure of Robert Strommen.


In the early part of the decade, Financial Network Corporation became the company’s broker dealer. In 1997, Daniel May joined the ownership team with Dan Anderson and Wayne Swenson. The agency grew to over 90 advisors by the end of the decade and continued to expand services.


2006 saw Dan May become President and CEO of the company. One year later, our name changed to AdvisorNet Financial to reflect the spirit of the organization — a network of great financial services advisors. 2007 also brought a shift in the ownership structure of the firm; AdvisorNet Financial added 23 new owners, becoming one of the few companies nationwide that is owned and lead by active advisors.


Cetera took ownership of Financial Network and became AdvisorNet Finacial’s new broker dealer in the beginning of 2010. Our RIA, AdvisorNet Wealth Management, added key staff and began to expand even further.


In 2011, AdvisorNet Portfolio Partners became the latest service to be added to our famous “Circle of Services.” AdvisorNet Financial was awarded as a Top Workplace winner for the first time in 2011, an award we were recognized for 5 years in a row. Our office also moved to our current home in the 701 Building in downtown Minneapolis.


AdvisorNet Financial added retail brand AdvisorNet Financial Partners, with locations in Minnesota and Arizona.
